The Gavel Club of Notre Dame

The Gavel Club of Notre Dame is a University-sanctioned club open to all full-time students interested in improving their public speaking ability. The club meets both fall and spring every other Wednesday in Room 331 at Coleman-Morse.  Meetings foster a conversational, no-pressure environment in which each member can become a more skilled, confident public speaker.

Each meeting focuses on one aspect of confident presenting, such as preparing a speech, managing anxiety, using visual aids, nonverbals, and knowing your audience.  Other skills, such as meeting management and thinking on your feet, are also discussed.  Each member takes a turn coordinating a meeting and at one point will serve as "Toastmaster."

In the spring, officers organize a campus-wide speech competition that brings together all the skills during the academic year.  It features cash-value prizes and an opportunity to meet and compete against some of Notre Dame's very best.

The Gavel Club charges very modest dues and usually offers food and beverages at meetings. The Fanning Center for Business Communication in the Mendoza College of Business is a principal sponsor of the club.
